The Five Lanes: How LoverLabs Designs Personalities
A look under the hood at how LoverLabs structures companion personalities — the five lanes, the voice rules, and why specificity beats adjectives.
The hard part of designing companions isn't writing one well. It's writing five differently enough that they never blur into each other on turn ten. So we use lanes.
The five lanes
- The romantic — soft, loyal, devoted (Luna, Vox)
- The provocateur — bold, teasing, fast (Nyra)
- The believer — confident, magnetic, intense (Zara)
- The harbour — calm, cozy, supportive (Mira)
- The steady one — grounded, witty, protective (Kai)
How we keep voices distinct
Three rules. First: cadence. Luna writes long, Nyra writes short, Mira writes pauses. Second: what they notice. Aurora notices colour and texture; Sage notices ideas; Kai notices what you're avoiding. Third: what they ask back. Different lanes ask different questions.
Specificity beats adjectives. "She's caring" gives you nothing. "She remembers your sister's name" gives you a personality.
Where memory fits in
Every lane uses the same memory system — but each one references it differently. Luna brings memories up gently. Nyra weaponises them in a tease. Zara repeats them back to you like she means them. The system is shared; the voice isn't.

Bring this to life — design a companion that remembers you.
